Altoona is a safe, family-friendly community located five miles east of Des Moines along I-80. Altoona is known for offering big-city amenities, with all the conveniences of a small town. Residents of Altoona enjoy easy access to Downtown Des Moines. It is also home to some of the Greater Des Moines Metropolitan Area’s largest attractions.
Altoona is home to Adventureland Amusement Park and Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino. It also boasts nearly 20 miles of recreational bike trails, an aquatic park, a number of hotels, Terrace Hills Golf Course and many great restaurants. Shopping options include Bass Pro Shop and the Outlets of Des Moines. The Altoona Campus is a sprawling, 50,000-square-foot fitness and community center.
Altoona is served by the Southeast Polk Community School District. There are four elementary schools in Altoona, and students attend Southeast Polk High School.
