Additional 2020-2021 Des Moines Rankings
In addition to being the second safest city, Des Moines continued to rank highly in other areas in 2020-2021 as well. The U.S. News & World Report named our metro area as the seventh best place to live and the third most affordable place to live in the U.S.
The publication stated that to make the top of the “Best Places to Live” list, a city had to have good value, be a desirable place to live, have a strong job market, and a high quality of life. To determine the most affordable places to live, the median gross rent and annual housing costs for mortgage-paying homeowners of each metro area were calculated. Des Moines ranked well on all of these determining factors. In fact, this is what U.S. News has to say about Des Moines:
- “The metro area of more than 600,000 has a small-town, know-your-neighbor feel to it. It's a place where you'll bump into people you know at the grocery store and get invited to backyard barbecues. Newcomers, take note: The people of Des Moines are some of the nicest you'll ever meet.”
